The newest OUD wave (1995-2020) encompassing the current deadly Fentanyl crisis, has caused nearly 1 million American deaths from drug overdose in the last 25 years. Even with this appalling and continuing history, almost overnight, things got much worse. Suddenly, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans suffering from OUD and opioid addiction had to deal with the additional problems of personal isolation, social distancing, interrupted addiction support, and decreased availability of Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT).

This webinar will discuss the history of the opioid epidemic along with newest Opioid Treatment Program Guidance from the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and newly evolving Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and MAT policy changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional examples will be given as to how opioid addiction increases vulnerability to COVID-19 pneumonia, CNS depression, poor nutrition and secondary infections. Finally, Dr. Bornstein will identify "red flags" and warning signs to look for that may cause regression a patient’s progress because of the COVID-19 pandemic issues facing all Americans.
